This plan was originally developed 60 years ago by a naturopath in Hawaii named Stanley Burroughs, who used grade B Canadian maple syrup by itself in his detox program. In the 1980’s, a group of Swiss researchers developed a new formula, still using Canadian maple syrup, and combining it with four southeast Asian palm syrups to create what they called Madal Bal syrup.
Ingredients of the Maple Syrup and Lemon Juice Diet are beneficial to good health. Maple syrup contains manganese to build strong bones and connective tissues plus zinc to protect our immune system. Palm syrup has calcium for bone health and potassium to promote heart and kidney function. Lemon juice has acidity, which helps cleanse toxins from the body. Both cayenne pepper and ginger add a hot element that revs up the metabolism, and a faster metabolism helps the body clean out toxins. The other ingredients you’ll need are fresh, organic lemons (not bottled lemon juice concentrate or lemon flavouring); hot or cold purified water, depending on your preference; and either organic cayenne pepper or organic ground ginger.
To make a single serving, in one glass mix together two tablespoons, or 20 ml, of Madal Bal tree syrup; two tablespoons of lemon juice, which is around half a lemon; a half pint of water; and a half pinch of cayenne pepper (or you can use ginger). To make enough servings for a day, mix together 140 ml of the Madal Bal syrup, 3 lemons, 1 litres of water, and one pinch of either cayenne pepper or ginger for each serving. This recipe will make a half litre, or about 7 servings. No matter which recipe you choose, the dosing recommendation is to drink six to nine half-pint servings each day.
There are four different programs of the maple syrup and lemon juice diet. For the full benefits of the plan, you can choose the full detox, which is an all-liquid plan in which you won’t eat any solid foods. For those who are new to the plan, a 5-7 day cleanse is recommended; those who have tried it before can try to go for 10 days. It’s always advisable to see a doctor before undertaking any diet plan. Discuss with your doctor if you plan to be on the diet for up to 14 days, and do not stop taking any prescribed medications without talking with your doctor.
If you choose the relaxed version of the detox plan, you’ll be able to eat some solid foods. Substitute one or two meals a day for two or three glasses of the liquid mixture. The relaxed plan can be beneficial if this is your first time trying the plan, or you can extend your detoxification process after the full version by switching to the relaxed version.
With the once-a-week plan, you only have to go without solid food for one day, and it can be a good way to give your system a chance to cleanse and rejuvenate after a week of hard work.
The fourth option is the master plan. On this plan, you do the full version or the relaxed version twice a year, followed by the once-a-week plan.
